Humans are creatures of habit. We like it when things go as planned, it makes us feel like we’re in control of our lives.
When things don’t go as planned or we’re not fully in control of certain outcomes, for many people, this can be a large source of stress.
Whether you’re buying or selling a house, real estate transactions are largely unpredictable. You can often predict how things may go, but you can never say with true certainty what will happen.
This uncertainty is what can make buying or selling a home extremely stressful. When you don’t know when, if, or how a transaction will go and where you live is at stake, it can be a lot to deal with.
In this post, we’ll offer you some advice on how to cope with the uncertainty of a move. As a realtor, we help clients cope with this every day.
Oftentimes, when we’re in a situation where you can’t control the outcome, we become fixated on all of the things we cannot control.
In a real estate transaction, there are so many parts of the transaction that are out of your hands. You have no control over whether or not a seller will accept your offer. You don’t have control over whether or not a home inspection will go well and a seller will complete repairs. Or, you don’t have control over when and at what price your home will sell for.
With so many things out of your hands in a real estate transaction, you’ll drive yourself crazy if you try to control the things that are out of your hands. Instead of fixating on the things that you can’t control, focus on the things that you do have control of.
For example, while you cannot control how quickly your home will sell or what it will sell for, you can set yourself up for success by hiring the right realtor. A realtor can help you market and price your home effectively, which in turn can help sell your home as quickly and for as much money as possible.
Or, as another example, you cannot guarantee loan approval, but you can help ensure your best chances by hiring a good loan officer and making sure you get all of the necessary documentation to them in a timely matter. By doing this, you’ll give yourself the best chances at loan approval.
Focus on the aspects of the transaction that you can control and you’ll set yourself up for success. There’s a lot you can’t control in a real estate transaction, but there is a lot you can to do help with the success of it.
Have you ever let your mind get the best of you? In certain stressful scenarios, our minds can run rampant with worst-case scenarios. When we do this, we cause ourselves unnecessary stress.
In the case of selling or buying a home, things are fluid. There are a lot of things that can go wrong or change over the course of a transaction. What if an inspection goes badly? Or, if the closing date gets moved? Or, if the buyer purchasing your home gets turned down for their loan? Or, if your loan gets denied a day prior to closing?
These are just a few of the things that can go wrong. If you think about every possible scenario, you’ll cause yourself a great deal of undue stress and sleepless nights.
The best piece of advice here is to not jump down that rabbit hole, avoid running through what-if scenarios. It’s easier said than done, but if you take the attitude that you cannot control what hasn’t happened, you’ll save yourself a lot of stress. When and if a scenario arises that is stressful, you’ll handle the situation when it arises.
When you’re in the midst of a stressful situation, it can be easy to forget why you’re in that scenario in the first place. In this case, it can be helpful to focus on the end result.
Sure, dealing with buying or selling a home (or both) can be extremely stressful. But, it’s going to be pretty great once everything is said and done right? You’ll finally be in that amazing home and it will make everything worthwhile.
Remember, there was a reason you decided to make this big move. It’ll be worth everything once the transaction is through. Instead of focusing on the stress of the situation, focus on the excitement of what is to come. It’ll be so great once you’re finally in the home. When you stay focused on the end result, you’ll be more focused on the positive in the situation, not the negative.
Finally, do remember, there are a lot of times where things to go smoothly and end up better than you may have expected. Once everything is said and done, you’ll look back and realize it wasn’t all so bad after all.
There are many times where real estate transactions do go as planned and all the pieces fall into place. Sure, you may find some issues in the home inspection, but find that the seller is more than happy to accommodate the repairs. Or, if you miss out on the first home that you write an offer on, only to find another better home that hits the market a few days later. Needless to say, things generally have a way of working out the way that they’re supposed to.
When you hire the right professionals to assist you through the process, you’ll be ready to handle any situation that arises.
