First & Foremost: Can You Afford It?

A home may be lovely and have everything you want; but if you cannot afford it, it’s not worth it. Be sure you take into account the overall amount of owning the home because that will be more than just the mortgage payment.

It can be important to consider the following:

• Are there HOA dues?
• How much are the taxes?
• Is garbage pickup included? Or, is this something you’ll need to pay for separately?
• How much will your utilities cost?

Depending on the home, these items can add up. For example, a home that is located in the city will pay double taxes. This can increase your monthly mortgage payment.

If a home is out of your comfortable price range, it will stretch your monthly budget. When you move in, you probably will want to decorate and buy new furniture. If a home is out of your price range, it will be hard to do that. This can hinder your overall enjoyment of the home.

Trust Your Gut

Once you’ve squared away the financial details about a home, it’s important to think about what your gut is telling you.

There is a part of searching for a house that is emotional. Your gut  is what tells you how your instincts feel about a house. If you walk through a home and it immediately feels right, it’s something that you know. But, if you’re hesitant on what you feel about a home, your gut may be telling you that your heart isn’t fully invested.

Unfortunately, when the real estate market is competitive, you do risk losing out on a great home because you chose to sleep on it.
