“Rocky Top” Named The Best College Fight Song By USA Today
Tennessee’s “Rocky Top” has been named the best college fight song by USA Today, by the College Football Fan Index.
In the case of “Rocky Top,” the song is more of an unofficial fight song. Many people don’t know that the official fight song of Tennessee is “Down The Field.” After being played at Tennessee football games since 1972, “Rocky Top” became synonymous to Tennessee football to fans and foes alike with its catchy tune.
“Rocky Top” was written by the husband and wife country duo, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, who were famous for their songs “Wake Up Little Susie” and “Love Hurts.” The song “Rocky Top” was written in about 10 minutes by the duo to add an more uptempo song to one of their albums.
In 1967, the Osborne Brothers first recorded the song and it became a hit on the Billboard country charts. In 1970, Lynn Anderson recorded the song and it became a top 20 hit as well. Two years later, the Pride of the Southland band picked the song up to play at halftime during the Tennessee-Alabama game. Needless to say, the fans went nuts and it’s been played at Tennessee games ever since.
